The Constitution of the United States of America
Additional Amendments, Amendment XXIV, Section 1
Introduction:
The 24th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution prohibits the use of poll taxes in federal elections. Section 1 specifically states that the right of citizens to vote in federal elections shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state due to failure to pay any poll tax or other tax. This amendment was ratified in 1964 and aimed to eliminate financial barriers that could disenfranchise voters, particularly affecting low-income individuals and minorities.
Actual Text:
“The right of citizens of the United States to vote in any primary or other election for President or Vice President, for electors for President or Vice President, or for Senator or Representative in Congress, shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or any State by reason of failure to pay any poll tax or other tax. ”
