The Constitution of the United States of America

Additional Amendments, Amendment XVIII, Section 1

Introduction:

The Eighteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, ratified in 1919, established the prohibition of alcoholic beverages in the United States. Section 1 of this amendment states that the manufacture, sale, or transportation of intoxicating liquors within the United States and its territories is prohibited. This amendment marked a significant shift in American law and society, leading to the era known as Prohibition, which aimed to reduce crime and corruption associated with alcohol consumption. However, it ultimately resulted in various unintended consequences and was later repealed by the Twenty-First Amendment in 1933.

Actual Text:

“After one year from the ratification of this article the manufacture, sale, or transportation of intoxicating liquors within, the importation thereof into, or the exportation thereof from the United States and all territory subject to the jurisdiction thereof for beverage purposes is hereby prohibited. ”
